What Is Technical SEO?
Technical SEO is the practice of optimising your website’s infrastructure — its code, speed, structure, and server configuration — so that search engines can efficiently crawl, index, and understand your content. For Indian businesses, technical SEO is particularly important because India’s mobile-first internet users on variable-speed networks are less forgiving of slow, poorly structured websites. A page that loads in 5 seconds on a 4G connection loses 53% of visitors before it even loads (Google, 2024).
Why Technical SEO Matters
Think of your website as a physical store. Content SEO furnishes it with great products. Backlinks build its reputation. Technical SEO makes sure the doors open, the lights work, and customers can find what they need. If Google’s bots cannot crawl your pages, your content does not exist in search results — no matter how good it is.
The Core Components of Technical SEO
1. Website Crawlability
Google discovers and accesses your pages through automated bots (Googlebot). Key elements: robots.txt — tells search bots which pages to crawl and which to ignore (a misconfigured robots.txt can accidentally block Google from your entire site); crawl budget — Googlebot crawls a limited number of pages per day; internal linking — orphan pages with no internal links are often missed by crawlers.
2. Indexation
After crawling, Google decides whether to add your page to its index. Key elements: XML Sitemap submitted to Google Search Console, canonical tags to avoid duplicate content issues, noindex tags for pages intentionally excluded from search, and regular Search Console monitoring. Common issues for Indian WordPress sites: tag and category archive pages creating thousands of thin duplicate pages.
3. Core Web Vitals (Page Experience)
Google’s Core Web Vitals are official ranking signals as of 2024.
| Metric | What It Measures | Good Score | Poor Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) | How fast the main content loads | < 2.5 seconds | > 4 seconds |
| CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) | How much the page jumps while loading | < 0.1 | > 0.25 |
| INP (Interaction to Next Paint) | How fast the page responds to clicks | < 200ms | > 500ms |
Indian users disproportionately use mid-range Android devices on 4G/5G networks. Fix Core Web Vitals by compressing images to WebP, enabling caching (WP Rocket, LiteSpeed), using a CDN (Cloudflare free plan works for most Indian sites), and deferring non-critical JavaScript.
4. Mobile Optimisation
85%+ of Indian internet users access the web via mobile. Google uses mobile-first indexing — ranking your site based on its mobile version, not desktop. Requirements: responsive design, readable text without zooming (minimum 16px), tap targets at least 48px, no horizontal scrolling.
5. HTTPS and Site Security
Google has used HTTPS as a ranking signal since 2014. A non-HTTPS site displays security warnings that destroy trust and conversion rates. SSL certificates are free via Let’s Encrypt on most Indian hosting providers (Hostinger, SiteGround, Bluehost).
6. Structured Data (Schema Markup)
Schema markup is JSON-LD code that helps search engines and AI systems understand your content in a structured way. In 2026, AI systems like Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity heavily prefer schema-marked content for citations. Pages with proper schema are 30–40% more likely to be cited in AI-generated answers.
7. Internal Linking Structure
Internal links distribute PageRank across your site and help Google understand which pages are most important. Best practices: every page reachable within 3 clicks from homepage, descriptive anchor text with keywords (“SEO services in Bangalore” not “click here”), and content clusters linking pillar pages to supporting posts.
Technical SEO Audit: Where to Start
- Verify Google Search Console — check for crawl errors and indexing issues
- Run a PageSpeed Insights test — address any “Poor” Core Web Vitals scores
- Check robots.txt — make sure important pages are not accidentally blocked
- Submit your XML sitemap in Search Console
- Enable HTTPS and force SSL on all pages
- Add LocalBusiness and FAQPage schema markup at minimum
- Run Screaming Frog to find and fix broken links
